How Do Noise Reduction Windows Work?

Sound is a pressure wave that is measured in decibels (dB), a logarithmic unit that increases exponentially, which denotes the power or intensity of the wave. Noise reduction glass is specifically designed to reduce this intensity by reducing the wave’s power. It does this by utilising the naturally occurring resonant frequencies in two different thicknesses of glass.

Simply put; the wave is unable to resonate at the frequency, and with the power, it wants to, effectively losing energy as it tries to pass through the panes. By utilising panes which have different thicknesses, noise reduction glass basically disturbs the sound wave, causing it to reduce in intensity before it gets into your house. As such, noise reduction glass offers reductions of 35 dB – 65db (and potentially more), which is a marked decrease when you consider the following:

  • A difference of 1 dB is practically unnoticeable.
  • A difference of 3 dB is just perceptible
  • A difference of 5 dB represents a clear difference
  • A difference of 10 dB perceptibly halves/doubles the noise.

If that’s still confusing, put it like this – the optimal internal noise level for a living room or bedroom is around 30 dB. Disturbances from the outside world can take this up to 75 dB, which can be a real pain.

With our total solution, this needn’t be a concern anymore. Levels will be reduced by half, back down to 30 dB, returning peace to your property.

Problem solving

Why Noise Reduction Windows?

In order to get the best results in reducing your home’s noise pollution levels, at Hugo Carter we have started from the ground up and have manufactured solutions for Sash and casement windows that aren’t available anywhere else.

Our engineers have managed to achieve startling results by going further than anyone, tweaking the minutest details. Just to give you an idea, the following are some of the steps we’ve taken to create the total solution.

At Hugo Carter, we utilise a combination of timber which further reduces the noise. A combination of rubber and silicone seals also absorb reverberation. Placing noise dampening elements within the sash box prevents noise penetrating through. We use finishing elements with sound dampening materials and incorporate Pilkington and Saint Gobain noise reduction glass, the best glass manufacturers on the market for noise reduction. We then employ our unique installation and sealant method for complete protection.

The Best Solution For You?

To see if our bespoke Noise Reduction Sash and Casement windows are the right solutions for your home, please call our team who are always happy to help and can provide a great deal more information on our range products.

Do noise reduction windows really work?

Yes, noise reduction windows can significantly reduce outside noise when the glazing, frame and installation are designed to work together. A complete noise reduction window system will usually outperform a glass-only upgrade.

What is the difference between acoustic glass and noise reduction windows?

Acoustic glass windows focus on the glazing element, while noise reduction windows refer to the full window system, including the frame and installation details.

Are noise reduction windows suitable for sash windows?

Yes. In many period homes, bespoke sash windows can be specified to improve noise reduction while preserving the look of the property.

Can noise reduction windows be used in listed buildings or conservation areas?

It depends on the property and the planning context. Hugo Carter also provides guidance on windows for listed buildings and windows for conservation areas.

How do I know which solution is right for my home?

The best next step is to book a visit so the property, the existing windows and the type of noise can be assessed properly.

What are the available Noise Reduction Window Solutions?

You will no doubt be aware that there are various options that can help combat the problem of noise pollution in your home. The 3 most common options on the market are:

Noise Reduction: Good

Visual Appearance: Good

Secondary Glazing (AVERAGE)

A separate glass panel that fits behind your current window. Timber secondary glazing frames can make an attractive feature in a period home.

Noise Reduction: Average

This solution opts for the addition of the second sheet of glass in a frame which can dampen a certain amount of noise. This is most likely your cheapest option

Visual Appearance: Poor

Noise reduction isn’t as substantial as with other solutions. This is not the most aesthetically pleasing option as well.

Noise Reduction Glass (POOR)

Acoustic glass that replaces the glass in your window frame.

Noise Reduction: Poor

In most cases, however, we wouldn’t recommend this option since sound not only passes through the glass but through the frame and gaps as well.

Visual Appearance: Average

Replacing the current glass with acoustic glass can be mildly effective so long as there are no other problems with your window frames – for example, unseen gaps and poor fitting/alignment.

How it works

Our Process

image

Step 1 – Initial Enquiry

Before contacting us, please make sure you have certain details to hand. These include the property location and type, especially if it is a listed building or in a conservation area, the details of your problem and the kind of windows and glazing you currently have. We will make sure we have enough information to plan an effective initial visit.

Step 2 – Initial Visit (Noise Assessment & Pricing Survey)

An acoustic specialist will talk you through your best options and give you an immediate idea of the different noise levels, then advise you on the best route forward. This initial visit is there to clarify the brief and help you understand the options before you commit.

Step 3 – Quotation & Noise Report

Based on the survey completed during the initial visit, our team will email a full costing together with a clear explanation of the suggested solution. We then follow up to answer questions and sense-check the recommendation with you.

Step 4 – Installation Survey

Once you have chosen to proceed, senior surveyors visit to take millimetre-accurate measurements and confirm the best method of installation. This is also where final aesthetic choices such as timber, paint colour and ironmongery are signed off.

Step 5 – Manufacture Updates

During manufacture, our team keeps you updated so you know how the order is progressing and when to expect the next stage.

Step 6 – Installation

When installation begins, the work is carefully managed so the property is protected throughout. The aim is a tidy, controlled installation that delivers the right acoustic, thermal and visual result.

Step 7 – Follow Up

After installation, we follow up to make sure everything is working as it should and to answer any questions you have about making the most of your new windows or doors.

Read our Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Hugo Carter bespoke timber windows different?

Each window is made around the property rather than forced into a standard size or profile. We consider the opening, the age and style of the building, the glazing requirement, the ironmongery and the finish, so the final window feels like it belongs to the home.

Can bespoke timber windows help reduce noise?

Yes. Timber frames, acoustic glazing, specialist seals and careful installation can work together to reduce unwanted noise from roads, rail, aircraft or busy neighbourhoods. The specification depends on the source of the noise and the property itself, which is why the assessment stage matters.

Are timber windows suitable for period homes?

They are often the best choice for period properties because they can be shaped, detailed and finished to respect the original character of the building. Bespoke timber windows are especially useful where standard replacement units would look too modern or out of proportion.

Can you make windows for unusual sizes or shapes?

Yes. Bespoke timber windows can be designed for non-standard openings, including fixed windows, side-hung windows, tilt and turn windows, side swing windows and fully reversible designs. The aim is to solve the practical requirement without compromising the look of the property.

Do you work on listed buildings or conservation area homes?

Yes. Hugo Carter regularly works with homes where the appearance of the windows is sensitive. We can help specify sympathetic timber windows that preserve the character of the property while improving comfort, security and acoustic performance.

How long do hardwood timber windows last?

Well-made hardwood timber windows are built for long service life, especially when they are installed correctly and maintained with care. The exact lifespan depends on exposure, finish and upkeep, but the intention is a durable window that can be repaired and refreshed rather than treated as a disposable product.

Can I choose colours, handles and other details?

Yes. Personalisation is part of the value of a bespoke timber window. Paint or stain colours, glazing bars, handles, fasteners and other ironmongery can be chosen to complement the building and the interior scheme.

What happens before installation?

The process starts with understanding the property, the problem you want to solve and the look you want to achieve. Measurements, product specification and installation details are then checked before the windows are made, helping the fitting stage run smoothly and with minimal disruption.
