Noise Pollution

Soundproof Your Home: Living Under A Flight Path?

If your domestic peace is disrupted by a flight path, talk to the team at Hugo Carter about finding the solution to aircraft noise.

The noise of an aircraft taking off or coming in to land has become a familiar one to millions of people in recent decades. For anyone living near airports, there is little prospect of that noise abating any time soon. If your domestic peace is disrupted because you are under or near a flight path, it is time to talk to Hugo Carter about finding an answer.

“Early on we realised that if we wanted to truly transform peoples’ lives through their living environments, we needed to develop more deeply our fascination with, and knowledge of, the ‘science of silence’ – and then apply that expertise to our products and our process.”

Jacob Gwalbert Figura, CEO

Can Soundproof Windows Prevent Aircraft Noise?

We believe the best solution is to speak to a specialist in the field of noise reduction. We can work with you to deliver the ultimate answer to aircraft noise; soundproof windows which are an elegant and effective addition to your home.

Our engineers will help you to find the best solution to fit your home and your budget.

How We Soundproof Homes

Our engineers assess each property individually, inside and out. We use professional noise analysers, taking readings in each room of the house. Any aircraft noise data is then analysed and informs our designs of the best solution for the specific noise frequencies in every part of the property.

By taking these steps, we can accurately assess the requirements of each home, to recommend the specific soundproofing solution which will be most effective at that address.

Aircraft Noise Pollution Levels

Even if you do not live directly under a flight path, you can still suffer discomfort from the noise of aircraft taking off and landing. With the volume of air traffic constantly increasing, the amount of planes in the skies over Britain will also keep rising – with more night flights taking place to add to the din.

The skies over the South-East of England are among the busiest in the world. Aircraft use Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Stansted and Luton, as well as dozens of smaller airfields.

The problem of aircraft noise pollution is acute for hundreds of thousands of people who live and work in the vicinity of airports.

Soundproof Your Home From Aircraft Noise Pollution

There are several ways in which you can decrease the level of aircraft noise pollution in your home.

One option is to check your walls and exterior doors and make small repairs to seal any obvious gaps to ensure they give a greater degree of protection and insulation against the sound.

There are DIY solutions such as window-plugs, which are soundproof sponges designed to keep out a certain amount of noise. While this may eliminate some of the noise, it will not achieve the same level of aircraft noise insulation as a bespoke installation designed to your specific requirements.

How do Aircraft Cause Noise Pollution?

Nobody who has ever lived or worked under a flight path needs to be told that aeroplanes are an extremely loud form of transport. But what exactly causes the noise?

Aircraft noise pollution falls into three categories:

Aircraft systems: Some of the functions required during flight can cause noise, though at a much lower level than the other two sources.

Mechanical noise: Aircraft engines are as loud as they are powerful; they can exceed an ear-shattering 140 decibels during take-off. The engines are the main source of aircraft noise pollution.

Aerodynamic noise: This is produced by the airflow around the fuselage and wings. This noise becomes louder as the aircraft moves faster and at lower altitudes because of the density of the air.

Where are the Flight Paths?

If you leave near an airport – as so many of us now do – a There are several online resources that will enable you to see how likely it is that your peaceful evenings – or even restful nights – are going to be disturbed by overhead traffic. Here are some materials relating to Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports:

Civil Aviation Authority: Report on noise exposure contours

Heathrow Airport: Track flights via “My Neighbourhood”

Detailed map of how Heathrow flights affect people in West and South-West London

CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) carries out consultations on ways in which the aviation industry communicates with the public on subjects like aircraft noise

Noise pollution maps give a broad indication of the levels of sound experienced in different areas. Although these are a helpful guide, Hugo Carter does not rely on them alone when assessing the degree of pollution being suffered at a particular address.

Our Engineers

Our engineers were trained by experts from the Institute of Acoustics at Southampton Solent University. Their extensive and ongoing training covers noise assessment, noise analysis and noise mitigation techniques.

Hugo Carter’s engineers are the finest in their field. They bring with them a depth of knowledge about all aspects of glazing and the provision of efficient, cost-effective soundproof solutions.

We also use professional noise analysers to assess the level of sound, rather than telephone apps or cheap hand-held devices.

Hugo Carter was awarded the 2019 UK Enterprise Award for Best Window and Door Manufacturer, and Silent Windows was named the most innovative product of the year.

Our Range of Soundproof Windows can Prevent Noise Pollution from the following:

Road Noise Pollution: It is very rare to find a home that suffers no disruption at all from the sound of cars, lorries, motorcycles and buses.

Train Noise Pollution: The insistent, repetitive metallic thundering of a nearby line can make a huge impact on your domestic peace.

Anti-Social Noise Pollution: Other people’s noise, in the form of loud music, late parties or rowdy teenage gangs, can be a serious nuisance.
