DOOR NOISE ADVICE

Acoustic Door Seals

Why seals are often the key to better door soundproofing.

Overview

An acoustic door seal helps close the small gaps that allow sound to pass around a door. For many doors, these gaps are a bigger problem than the door material itself.

Good seals can improve privacy, reduce draughts and help a door perform closer to its intended acoustic level.

Perimeter seals

Perimeter acoustic seals sit around the sides and top of the door frame. They need consistent contact with the door leaf when it is closed.

If the frame is twisted or the door is poorly aligned, even a good seal may not work properly.

Door sweeps and drop seals

An acoustic door sweep or automatic drop seal helps control the gap at the bottom of the door. This is often the largest air path in an internal doorway.

Soundproof door sweep products vary in quality. The right choice depends on flooring, threshold detail and how often the door is used.

Panels and full door upgrades

An acoustic door panel can add mass, but it should not be treated as a complete solution if the edges remain unsealed.

In some cases, a new acoustic door with integrated seals will be more effective and better looking than adding parts to an unsuitable existing door.

Small details, large effect

Acoustic door sweeps and seals are modest components, but they can make a noticeable difference when specified and fitted correctly.

Hugo Carter can assess whether seals alone are enough or whether the full door and frame need upgrading.
