NOISE ADVICE

Aircraft Noise Reduction

Reducing airplane noise over the house.

Overview

Aircraft noise can be especially frustrating because it is intermittent, intrusive and often strongest at times when the home should feel restful.

If you regularly hear airplane noise over the house, acoustic windows and careful sealing can help reduce the disturbance.

How aircraft noise behaves

Aircraft noise can include low-frequency rumble as well as sharper overhead sound. It may enter through windows, rooflights, doors and other lightweight parts of the building.

The window specification needs to consider this range rather than treating the problem as ordinary street noise.

Windows and roof-facing rooms

Bedrooms and upper floors are often most affected by aircraft noise. Old sash windows, poorly sealed casements and thin glazing can make the issue worse.

Acoustic laminated glass, improved seals and stable frames can reduce the amount of sound entering through the window opening.

Ventilation and overheating

Aircraft noise can make it difficult to sleep with windows open. A quieter window strategy should therefore consider ventilation and summer comfort as well as acoustic performance.

Acoustic ventilation may be appropriate where background airflow is needed without simply reopening the noise path.

A realistic improvement

No domestic window can remove every trace of aircraft noise, but a well specified system can make overhead sound less disruptive.

Hugo Carter can review the room, the existing windows and the level of disturbance before advising on the best route.

Next step

If you would like advice for your own property, Hugo Carter can assess the existing windows or doors and recommend a specification that suits the building, the noise source and the way you use the room.
