Does Double Glazing Reduce Noise?

Overview

Double glazing can reduce noise, but the result depends on the type of double glazing and the quality of the window around it. Some double glazed units are designed mainly for heat loss, not sound reduction.

If noise is the main issue, the window needs to be specified acoustically from the start.

How double glazing helps

Double glazing sound reduction comes from adding another layer of glass and an air or gas-filled cavity. This can reduce the amount of sound passing directly through the window.

The improvement is usually greater when the panes are different thicknesses or one pane is laminated acoustic glass.

Why some double glazing disappoints

Double glazing noise reduction can be disappointing when the unit is basic, the panes are too similar or the window leaks air around the frame.

Sound will exploit gaps. A well sealed frame can be just as important as the glass specification.

Noise type matters

Traffic rumble, voices, sirens and aircraft do not all behave in the same way. A glass specification that helps with one type of sound may be less effective for another.

This is why a proper assessment is more useful than assuming all double glazing will perform equally.

A better acoustic approach

Hugo Carter can recommend double glazing, acoustic laminated glass, secondary glazing or replacement windows depending on the property.

The aim is a quieter room without sacrificing the appearance and character of the home.

Next step

If you would like advice for your own property, Hugo Carter can assess the existing windows or doors and recommend a specification that suits the building, the noise source and the way you use the room.
