ACOUSTIC GLASS ADVICE

Best Glass For Noise Reduction

How acoustic laminated glass and glass thickness affect sound.

Overview

The best glass for noise reduction is usually chosen as part of a complete window design. Glass thickness, lamination, pane spacing and frame construction all influence the final acoustic result.

There is no single best window glass to reduce noise in every home. The right build-up depends on the sound source and the window itself.

Acoustic laminated glass

Acoustic laminated glass uses an interlayer between panes to help damp vibration. This can be especially useful for traffic, voices and other intrusive urban noise.

Laminated glass also has safety and security benefits, because broken glass tends to remain bonded to the interlayer rather than falling away in sharp pieces.

Glass thickness and asymmetry

Acoustic glass thickness matters, but thicker is not always better on its own. Different pane thicknesses can help reduce resonance and improve performance across a wider range of frequencies.

The double glazed unit thickness in the UK is also limited by the frame, opening style and weight that the window can safely carry.

The cavity between panes

The space between panes influences acoustic performance. A well considered cavity can help, while a very narrow or poorly designed unit may not provide the expected sound reduction.

This is one reason secondary glazing can sometimes perform well acoustically: the distance between the original window and the internal panel can be substantial.

Glass must work with the frame

The best glass will underperform if it is installed into a weak or leaky frame. Hugo Carter specifies the glass and bespoke timber window together so the whole unit supports the acoustic target.

A survey helps identify the right combination for the property rather than relying on glass thickness alone.

Next step

If you would like advice for your own property, Hugo Carter can assess the existing windows or doors and recommend a specification that suits the building, the noise source and the way you use the room.
